Christian Fiction Friday: October 9th

Welcome to this week’s edition of Christian Fiction Friday brought to you by me and my lovely and talented co-host, Alana Terry! This is a chance for Christian authors to post short snippets from their works in progress! Easy and fun!

This week, I’ve returned to A Harmony for Steve, which is the 4th book in the Song of Suspense Series.

cover-front_9781939603-4ah4s_640Steve jerked awake when he felt the toe of a boot nudge him. It took a moment to get his barrings. He lay face down in the sand. As he pushed himself up to his knees, he realized that he didn’t have on a shirt and his jeans were soaked with ocean water. His head pounded and his stomach rolled.

“Good morning, sunshine.” His manager, Cain Proctor, used a normal tone of voice, but it sounded like a gong going off inside of his head.

He pushed himself to a sitting position and drew his legs up. It looked like he didn’t have on any shoes, either. As he moved, he winced at a pain on his side near his hip. It looked like he had a nasty gash, but he couldn’t remember what happened.

Deciding he could maybe stand without falling, he got to his feet. Wobbling slightly, he pushed both hands through the tangled mane of hair. He needed a shower to wash the salt water off. But first –

He patted his pockets but came up empty. Without being asked, Cain handed him a cigarette and a lighter. As soon as Steve lit the cigarette, Cain held out a little blue pill and a bottle of water.

“What’s that?”

“It’s called you have a concert tonight and you need to function.”

He didn’t want the pill. He never wanted the pills. Just like he didn’t want the party the night before. But if he had a concert tonight, then he needed something to help him function. With a sigh, he popped the pill in his mouth and washed it down with the entire bottle of water.

He turned and looked at the row of  houses behind him. He spotted his. He hadn’t wandered too far away this time.

“They’re all gone,” Cain said. For the first time, Steve looked at him. He took the term Hipster to an all new level. He had on a navy suit with all of the edges trimmed in white, making him look like a cartoon drawing. His red and white checkered shirt was buttoned to the neck. He wore horned rimmed glasses, black chargers in his ears, and had his goatee trimmed close to his face.

“Who are all gone?” The water he’d consumed started to make him feel better and his brain began to lose some of the haze of the hangover.

“The people who were there last night.”

“The people you invited?” He started walking, knowing that Cain would follow. “I told you I didn’t want a party.”

“It’s the 4th of July and you’re Steven Slayer, lead singer and guitarist of Abaddon. You throw parties.”

He wanted to rail and scream, but the pounding in his head prevented him from doing anything more than quietly saying, “I don’t want any parties for a while. I need a break.”

He pivoted on his bare foot and walked over the sand toward his house. His side ached, terribly. He thought he might need to get it looked at. But even as he walked, he felt the pill start to work its magic. By the time he entered his house and walked through the rubble a team of cleaners worked on cleaning up, he headed straight for the large stainless steel fridge in the kitchen and pulled out a cold beer. He drank most of it before he made it to his bedroom. As he stepped into the steaming shower, he tossed the empty bottle into the trash can.

Christian Fiction Friday: April 24th

Welcome to this week’s edition of Christian Fiction Friday brought to you by me and my lovely and talented co-host, Alana Terry! This is a chance for Christian authors to post short snippets from their works in progress! Easy and fun!

My snippet this week is from my current work-in-progress, A Harmony for Steve, book 4 in the Song of Suspense Series:

cover-front_9781939603-4ah4s_640When everyone had tasted his flesh, he used the ritual cloth to bandage his skin and stop the bleeding. Francis then intoned, “What else do you bring.”

Charles smiled and answered, “I bring an enemy for the flames.” With that, he lifted the Harmony Harper CD from the ground and offered it to Francis.

Francis grinned and stripped the cellophane from it, then removed the CD disk itself from the case. He allowed the case to fall to the ground. It would be an excellent place for Charles to hide a bootleg copy of Steven Slayer or some other true believer’s work.

Francis held the CD high and announced, “Nos vobis inimicus!” We bring you your enemy. Then he tossed the CD into the flames. Harmony Harper’s smiling face on the front of the CD melted as the flames engulfed it.e.

Christian Fiction Friday: March 27th

Welcome to this week’s edition of Christian Fiction Friday brought to you by me and my lovely and talented co-host, Alana Terry! This is a chance for Christian authors to post short snippets from their works in progress! Easy and fun!

Please note that there will be no Christian Fiction Friday on April 3, 2015. Please enjoy the holiday weekend.

cover-front_9781939603-4ah4s_640My snippet this week is from my upcoming book, A Harmony for Steve, book 4 in the Song of Suspense Series:

No more.

His promise repeated itself over and over again in his mind. The single kidney he had couldn’t take any more abuse, and one more binge might be the last. The message from the doctor resonated loud and clear. As much as he had spent the last thirteen years running as far and and fast away from whatever deity reigned above, he had no desire to meet Him anytime soon. So he’d chill on the drinking and the drugs, and he’d stick to not smoking even though right now the need for a cigarette screamed through every single pore in his skin.

When he thought he might be able to stand without falling back down or throwing up, he shakily stood and stumbled into the bathroom. He barely recognized the man staring back at him in the mirror. Black circles framed red rimmed eyes. A long beard covered his face and his hair lay in greasy strings all around his hollow cheeks that sunk into yellowed skin. One of his earlobes was crusty with dried blood where he’d apparently ripped out an earring.

Drink. Then shower. Then food.
