30 Days of Thankfulness Day 22

I often post a list of all the things for which I’m thankful on Thanksgiving. But, in an effort to get back into the habit of daily blogging, I’ve decided to do a post a day for the month of November.

22. Access to Real Food

I am so thankful that I live in a place where I have access to a Whole Foods, a Trader Joes, a Good Foods Co-Op, and innumerable farmers markets. I have an Arab grocery store where I can purchase products made without pork and local meats raised in good environments, and I have friends who give me farm fresh eggs. I have access to local grass-fed beef and local grass-fed lambs. I also have access to the organic bulk grains and dried legumes that I purchase and store because they don’t go bad.

I know that it is a gem to be so close to so much good food. Even in America, there are places where getting good, organic food is a difficulty. I understand that it’s a blessing, and every time I shop I am thankful to God for the abundance and for the privilege of having access to so many options for real food.

21. Mindless Entertainment

I LOVE mindless entertainment. It relaxes me and frees my mind from the constant thinking, planning, creating. It gives me a bit of a break, sometimes an hour, sometimes two — the more thrilling, the better. A good movie preview will even give me chills. Date nights revolve around movie releases. It’s silly, but I am completely okay with that.

20. Prayer

I posted a Facebook and Twitter status yesterday and asked, “How can I pray for you today?”

It is amazing the responses I got, publicly and privately. I was blessed all day long with the ability and freedom to pray for my friends and their friends. My asking and people responding blessed others as well, and they were open in sharing how much they appreciated it.

To have an open line to talk to God and know that He hears me and He answers me is unfathomable to my little human brain.

Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
You have relieved me in my distress;
Have mercy on me, and hear my prayer. ~Psalm 4:1

I am thankful for prayer and the ability to pray and the knowledge that I have people praying for me.

19. Debi Warford

A good book can be broken by a bad cover. I am not an artist and I don’t pretend to have an artist’s eye. That’s why I’m so thankful for my cover artist, Debi Warford. She has tirelessly worked to present my ideas created with the best possible artistic look. Because I’m not an artist, it’s not exactly easy to work with me. She makes it seem effortless.

She designed the logo for my publishing company and the imprint for my cookbook publishing, and also created the branding of my name.

I’m thankful God brought her into my life and am thankful for the beautiful covers she’s made for me.

18. Our Church

I love our church. When we walked in the doors of that building, we knew we belonged there. After we’d been there for about a year, I said something in a class one time about it, and a friend there said, “You’ve been going here longer than a year, haven’t you?” It feels like we’ve always been there.

Kaylee is immersed in the youth group and a leader on the state youth council. Our boys think of church as a second home. We have developed strong, meaningful friendships that we will carry with us our entire lives. And, we love our pastor and the message he delivers from God weekly.

I’m so thankful that God brought us to this congregation for worship.

30 Days of Thankfulness Days 15, 16, 17

I often post a list of all the things for which I’m thankful on Thanksgiving. But, in an effort to get back into the habit of daily blogging, I’ve decided to do a post a day for the month of November.

15, 16, 17. Freedom to Write

script-on-typwriter

When I first started writing, 15 years ago, I had a full time job. I got up every morning at 4AM and wrote until 6AM. I didn’t ever work on it at any other time. Saturdays were laundry/housekeeping days, and Sundays were my days of rest.

This week, on Wednesday (the 14th) morning, I had an idea for a new novella. It’s something I want to do special and it had to be done right away if it’s going to happen. So, I put aside the cookbook I was nearly finished writing, and started writing this story.

About three hours into my morning, the program I use to write crashed. I hadn’t yet saved the story, to it was completely gone. I took that as a “hint” and went back to the cookbook and finished it. By then, it was time to get the kids off of the bus.

Thursday, I opened my computer in the morning and started writing. I ignored that I was doing this daily blog post, I ignored the section in the cookbook that really needed attention, and I ignored the two loads of laundry that needed to be folded and just wrote. Friday morning, I showed up at the appointed time and place for jury duty, wasn’t picked to sit on any of the four trials that day, and went to the library to keep working on the story. I wrote and wrote, came home, fed husband and children, shut the door to my office, and wrote and wrote some more.

Saturday morning, I got up at 5AM finished the book by 8AM. In 2 1/2 days, I wrote 35,000 words. My editor and cover page designer are expediting the work for me so that this project can be finished in the time constraints I have.

I’m so thankful for the freedom to do this. I realize it’s a blessing that I’m able to determine my own work schedule, and that I have the freedom during the week to just write. I’ve lived both ways, and I try never to forget what a blessing it is.
