Interview with Sharon Srock and a Giveaway!

Welcome to Readers Write to Know! I asked you, my readers, what questions they would ask their favorite authors if given the chance, and the authors visiting my blog answered them! I’m always excited when I have a friend as my guest, and this week I’m thrilled to have my friend Sharon Srock as my guest! Sharon and I are in a brainstorming group together that meets in person twice a year. I love listening to her stories — especially her Star Trek convention stories. We have a text group and celebrate each others’ lives and give us an opportunity to pray for one another. It’s wonderful. I adore Sharon. When I saw her name on the list this week, I was so excited! Read on to see how to get a free book from Sharon and how to enter to win a copy of her book Maggie!

On the beach with my friends – Sharon and I are on the right

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am 66 years old and I’ve been writing for twelve years. I live in the middle-of-nowhere Oklahoma with my husband and three HUGE dogs. Between my husband and I we have 6 kids, more than twenty grands and the great-grands just keep coming. As I write this the great grands total fifteen with two more on the way. I love to bake and read. I don’t watch a lot of TV, when I do it’s usually cooking shows like CHOPPED or older shows in re-run.

Tell us about your current release. MAGGIE, LADIES OF GARFIELD, BOOK 18

SHE FINALLY HAS HER DREAM IN SIGHT.

Maggie Hart hasn’t always made the best choices. When the life she was trying to build for her kids is derailed by charges of neglect, she found promise instead of despair. The promise of getting her kids back home where they belong. The promise of making a better life for them with Christ at the center of their home. The promise of her own happily-ever-after with her children’s handsome foster father. One good deed will put all of those dreams in jeopardy.

HIS OBLIGATIONS OR HIS HEART?

Single kindergarten teacher Randy Caswell has his hands more than full when he takes two foster kids into his home. Caring for a newborn and a five-year-old should have turned his peaceful life upside down. Instead, it brought love to every corner of his heart, not just for the kids but for their mother. When the woman he loves is accused of a crime she didn’t commit, he feels obligated to put his duty to Max and Mariah ahead of his love for their mother.

WILL THEIR LOVE SURVIVE?

The choppy sea of wrong conclusions, old hurts, and delayed promises is littered with broken hearts. But if Maggie and Randy can keep their eyes on the Creator instead of the storm, maybe they’ll learn that no matter how messy life gets, God is always faithful.

With all those characters in your head screaming to get out how do you write fast enough to get it all down? In all honesty, I probably don’t write fast enough to suit them. Ten years ago I thought I might go crazy with so many voices in my head, but the characters and I reached a compromise. They will each get their turn, but they will have to wait their turn.

Whats the first major news headline that you can remember and what do you remember? I was in the second grade when Kennedy was shot. I remember sitting in the classroom when my teacher came in in tears and told us what had happened. I remember seeing John John’s salute as his father’s casket was carried by.

Who was your first Screen/Musical Crush? Davy Jones from the MONKEES. I had a “kissing Poster” taped to my bedroom wall. Davy got a kiss every night before I went to bed.

What advice do you have for aspiring writers? Find your people. I would not be a writer today if I hadn’t become involved in a local writing group. They understood the voices and helped me make sense of them and the stories they were trying to tell. You family might support you and love you but the will NEVER understand you like another writer will.

At what age did you know you wanted to write? I’ve heard stories of people who were writing stories in childhood (which is what I’d expect). But I’ve heard of others who randomly started much later in life, and that is so interesting to me! I was 54 when I wrote the first word of the first story. Writing was never my dream, but I was a reader from the moment I could hold a library card. I wouldn’t say that my start was random…God had been nudging me in that direction for a while…but I didn’t take that nudge seriously until I was 54.

Do you talk out plot lines with others, and if so, who? As I said, I’ve always been a reader. I have 2 daughters who won’t read, a mystery to me since I read to them and encouraged reading, but my oldest daughter is a great brainstormer. I have also been blessed with a circle of writer friends who love to sit around a table, either in person or by ZOOM and brainstorm.

Davy Jones!!! He’s always been a favorite of mine. I grew up on “the oldies” (which, for my kids, is now the stuff I loved from the ‘90s, LOL!). I’ve always loved boy bands, but not The Beatles because The Monkees were better.

My music listening years were the mid 60s to the early 70s. But of all the songs I loved, the Monkees were my favorites. Thanks for taking the time to chime in. Gook luck in the drawing.
