Interview with June Foster and a Giveaway!

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Welcome to Readers Write to Know! I asked you, my readers, what questions they would ask their favorite authors if given the chance, and the authors visiting my blog answered them! This week, I’m thrilled to have June Foster as my guest. I can feel June’s love for writing for God in the way she answered the questions, and I am so inspired by her heart. I hope you enjoy her interview as much as I did. Read on to see how you can enter to win an ebook of her latest release!

Tell us a little bit about yourself. Great. Thanks so much for having me on your blog today, Hallee. I’m a mother of two and grandmother of ten and never had any aspirations of writing fiction. I graduated with a bachelors and a masters degree and taught elementary school for 34 years, never with intentions to write. After I retired, my husband and I began traveling in our RV and the Lord tapped me on the shoulder. “I have a story I want you to write,” I felt I’d heard from Him. And write, I did, on the freeways and byways while traveling the US. To date I’ve written 27 contemporary romance and romantic suspense novels and I can’t see myself stopping any time soon.

Tell us about your current release. Love Found in Cranberry Cove is book 2 in the Cranberry Cove series. I’m so proud to say that book 1 recently won first place in the romantic suspense category of Blue Ridge Mountain Writer’s conference Selah award. The series is based on a real-life B&B in Ilwaco, Washington my husband and I visited years ago.

If you knew ahead of time your book would benefit only one person on their spiritual journey, would you still write it? Oh, most definitely. I didn’t answer the call to write because I wanted to make money, but to serve the Lord. Seeing one person receive eternal salvation by reading one of my books is more important than any monetary benefit I might receive.

Do you feel pressured to compromise your standards in order to reach a larger audience or be more successful? When I first started writing, I considered it. But then I remembered God'[s purpose for me to write. Of course, it’s nice to be recognized or to entertain others, but that’s not the ultimate goal of becoming an author of Christian books. Serving the Lord Jesus Christ is.

What is your personal, most effective way to get past writer’s block? It’s odd, but at first, I never got writer’s block. I couldn’t get enough words down on the paper every time I sat down to write. These days—a bit of a different story. I often get stuck and can’t figure out what’s going to happen next. I read that asking what would the character logically do next is a good thought to consider. Also, the best thing that works for me is to get up from the computer, do something else, and come back in an hour. Most of the time a fresh idea will pop into my head.

What advice do you have for aspiring writers? Ask yourself why you want to write. If you feel the Lord has truly called you, do everything in your power to progress. Read up on the “how to books,” go to writer’s conferences, take on-line classes, join a small writer’s group. Word Weavers of American and ACFW are two organizations that are very helpful. Then when time comes to submit to a publisher or agent, don’t take rejections personally. There are some authors who received many rejections before finally getting their book published. And pray, pray, pray.

What is your preferred method of writing? (computer, pen & paper, etc.) I write everything on the computer including prewriting, getting to know my characters, plot ideas, writing out the GMC (Goal Motivation Conflict) and everything else. It’s so much easier to edit and switch paragraphs around, etc.

Where’s your favorite place you’ve traveled in your RV?

    • I love that question because it’s such a challenge. There are many so it’s hard to narrow it down to one, but I’d have to say I’ve always enjoyed spending time at our National Parks. Cape Hatteras was one as we also saw the Wright Brothers’ Museum nearby. Mr. Rainier in Washington, State is another.

I love the cover and the series sounds interesting! It’s nice to “meet” you, June.

  5. Sherri, nice to meet you, too. Some of my friends I’ve made on the internet are just a dear to me as if I knew them in person. For example, my dear friend and fellow author Melissa Henderson. I feel I know her well and yet we’ve never met in person. Thank you for the kind words about the cover. My daughter who’s a photographer helped me with it, and my wonderful editor, Cynthia Hickey, designed it.

  6. Patty Patty

My parents bought an RV several years ago and have enjoyed a good bit of traveling (mostly on volunteer projects) for the past several years.

Thanks for sharing a bit about your writing journey with us.

  7. Patty, I’m so glad for the opportunity to do so. These days my husband is getting anxious to get another one, so who knows, I may be back on the road again.
