Interview with Debbi Migit and a Giveaway!

Welcome to Readers Write to Know! I asked you, my readers, what questions they would ask their favorite authors if given the chance, and the authors visiting my blog answered them! This week, I am so pleased to have Debbi Migit as my guest. I love Debbi’s description as she picked up the check from winning her first writing contest! I’m also touched by her heart for the reader. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did. Debbi is also giving away TWO books! Read on to see how you can enter to win!

About me: I’m 66 years old as of yesterday, and believe it or not, my youngest just left her teens a few weeks ago! We have three children, two still living at home, so I still “Mom” full-time. My first book, Child of Promise, is the true story of our three miraculous adoptions. We live in central Illinois, pretty much against our will, while dreaming of a cabin in Colorado

My latest book: September Shadows

Justice, Montana Series – Book One

After the sudden death of their parents, Jess Thomas, and her sisters, Sly and Maggie, start creating a new life for themselves. But when Sly is accused of a crime she didn’t commit, the young sisters are threatened with separation through foster care. Jess is determined to prove Sly’s innocence, even at the cost of her own life.

Cole McBride has been Jess’s best friend since they were children. Now his feelings are deepening, just as Jess takes risks to protect her family. Can Cole convince Jess to trust him−and God−to help her?

First major news headline: Since I’ve already confessed to my age I might as well tell you that I vividly remember the day President Kennedy was assassinated. I was eight years old and I remember being in the hallway near the Principal’s office when I heard a loud scream, and the secretaries began to cry. I hurried back to my classroom just in time to hear an announcement telling us that President Kennedy had been shot. Soon the hallways were filled with crying teachers and students and school was immediately dismissed.

Two days later, on Sunday, November 24, my family arrived at my grandparent’s home for Sunday dinner. The television was on and my whole family watched in horror as Jack Ruby shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald.

First screen crush: David McCallum (yes, Duckie from NCIS) as Illya Kuryakin on The Man From U.N.C.L.E I cut his picture from a magazine and kept it folded up in my wallet 😊

I was also crazy about Davey Jones from the Monkees. During lunch break our teachers let us plug in a portable record player and we listened to Daydream Believer, on vinyl of course, over and over.

When did I start to write: I started writing in first grade. Teachers often let my classmates act out my stories, and I won my first writing contest when I was in 7th grade. I remember collecting my $7.00 prize-an an actual check made out to me! I wore my white go-go-boots, orange mini-dress, and white newsboy cap. I had arrived!

As an adult, I began to realize that my writing could impact more than just my friends and family. I wrote a true story for a children’s magazine and received a letter from a young girl in New Zealand who told me how much she enjoyed it. There was no going back after that.

Typical reader: My heart is to reach women, especially those who are in the process of making life decisions. I want to show how exciting and adventurous the Christian life can be as we learn to hear and follow God’s direction for our lives. In the Justice, Montana series, my main character at this time is Jess, who is 16 going on 25 😊 However, there is also a developing story involving her older sister, Sly, who is early 20’s. And I’ve received great reviews from women (and men!) in their 60’s. I think a story, well-told, can appeal to all ages.

Do I have the plot ready when I write?  I have a general idea of where I’m headed and who is going with me. Some writers are plotters, but I’m more of a pantser-I write by the seat of my pants. I really enjoy the experience of having the story unfold before me, almost as if I am the reader and not the author. I can sit for hours and try to figure out the details of a plot only to give up, just jump in, and write. I’m always amazed when those elusive details suddenly appear on the page before my eyes.

Do I write for my own enjoyment? I confess I’m a selfish writer. Writing is hard work and if I’m going to put that much effort into it, I want to enjoy the experience. I try to write at least a few people I’d like to know since I have to live with them for the life of the project and beyond. In the second Justice, Montana book, I am writing about one of my favorite plotlines as a reader. I keep telling myself I have to write at least 2/3 of the book before I reward myself with writing those scenes.

    How’d you celebrate your birhtday?

    1. It started with a surprise delivery from Edible Gifts-chocolate covered strawberries, candied pecans, gourmet caramel corn, a Teddy Bear, and a card that made me cry-all from my oldest son who lives in CA. More love throughout the day. Concluded with my favorite pizza and a new episode of NCIS. I know how to par-tay! 🙂

      Blessings,
      Debbi

Happy Birthday! I do not fault you one bit for being a “selfish” writer. I had a crush on Mark Harmon in his Reasonable Doubts Days.

    1. Hi Sonnetta,

I STILL have a crush on Mark Harmon! LOL

      Blessings,
      Debbi

  2. Hi Trudy,

And I love finding new readers 🙂 I hope you enjoy Jess and Cole’s story!

    Blessings,
    Debbi

  3. I am looking forward to diving into this book. I enjoyed reading a little more about you and hope this new book series really takes off and takes you to places you’ve only dreamed of!

Wonderful interview! Thank you Halle for interviewing other authors and so happy to have “met” Debbi Midget! As an adoptive mom myself, I’m interested in your adoption story.

    1. Hi Melissa,

One of my favorite things is to connect with other adoptive moms. We each have our own miraculous story!

      Blessings,
      Debbi

  4. Hi Angie,

After this past year (2020) I’m definitely ready to ‘take off’! I’m hoping to travel to Montana and visit the area where the Justice series is set.
    Blessings,
    Debbi
