Those of you who follow me on social media know that I often post the “National Day” posts — for instance, yesterday was National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, so I posted a recipe for chocolate ice cream. It’s just something fun that gets quite a bit of interaction — obviously not on the scale of a cute cat picture, but some. I always enjoy trying to tie the day into something personal to me as a way of letting the people who follow me get to know me better.
So, today, June 8th, is National Best Friends Day. That one gave me pause. I didn’t know what to say about it or what to post about it. The fact is, I’m not really a “best friends” kind of girl. Don’t get me wrong, I have some GOOD friends; friends I love having girls’ night out dates, friends I love meeting for coffee, friends I’d bring a meal to in a heartbeat. I have friends I could call on in an emergency, and friends I MISS SO MUCH after moving away from our home of 8 years. But, I don’t have a “best friend.”
I’m not a great friend on any “girl” level. I tend to keep to myself. I enjoy shopping alone, I enjoy meals alone, I don’t “need” someone to fill my time. I don’t enjoy talking on the phone, and chances are good it will take me an hour to return a text message. I have a daily schedule that I don’t relish interrupting.
I have a good friend in my new neighborhood with whom I have very quickly fallen in love. Recently, I remarked on how I wasn’t a good friend and she tried to challenge that. I said, “How many times this week did I call you?” The answer, of course, was zero.
So when I saw “National Best Friend Day”, the only person I could think of to fill that slot is my husband, Gregg. He’s my first pick for calling, my first pick when I’m looking for a partner in crime, my first thought when I have important news to share. When I go out with girlfriends, as much as I enjoy it, I lose an evening with him and I actually have to convince myself to go. He gets my sense of humor and can fill in the blanks with all of my stories.
I know it’s cliche’, but it’s true. my husband really is my best friend. Happy National Best Friend Day, Gregg!

Thank you!
I guess it’s a cliche’ for a reason…LOL
All I can say is “yes.” I get this. I know it’s true of you, but it’s also true about me. From an almost good friend who might be fun if we could ever convince ourselves to go out. 🙂
