Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am a Christian author, living in Bullitt County, KY. Teaching Sunday school and church work enhances my life. My hobbies are reading, writing, traveling, and playing with my grandchildren. I am the Literary Director of the Bullitt County Arts Council and a member of the Shepherdsville Chamber of Commerce.
Tell us about your current release. I don’t have a current release. I have book two and book three of the Logan Count Trilogy: Shadows in the Shade and Murder at Willow Shade still in eBook format, but will be released in print next year. I have two other titles with Desert Breeze Publishing, Inc. In 2012 Secrets of Willow Shade finaled in the Grace Awards and Murder at Willow Shade finaled in Grace Awards in 2013
What do you think is lacking in Christian Fiction? So many times, reality is amiss in Christian fiction. Evil touches both the just and the unjust. Christians fail, but if we ask, our Savior is ready to forgive.
How do you push past the fear of your writing being average and be bold enough to sell it to a publisher or agent or audience if you self publish)? I write what I feel led to write, but then I become scared it isn’t good enough. I’m always surprised each time I receive an acceptance. I am already anxious about my work in progress. It is very much out of the box.
What inspired you to start writing, or did you always want to write? I always wanted to write and sold short stories now and then. When my husband died, I began writing seriously to give me a reason to get up mornings.
Have you always wanted to write a book? Rooting through some old papers, I found chapters of the first book I ever attempted . That was in 1957. It was also my last attempt until 2010.
What were some of your major roadblocks and how did you overcome them? Life always got in the way. No time to write. I was a fulltime mom and wife with a part-time job. Active as school volunteer in clubs, committees and sports, When the kids grew up and my husband retired, we traveled. I began writing short stories and had several published in Chicken Soup for the Soul Books.
What is your inspiration for writing? I hope to give Christian readers something clean but interesting to read. Also I want to share my Christianity with others, plus I get a blessing from writing in His will.
Where’s the strangest place you’ve ever had a great writing idea? I get ideas in my dreams.
Who were some of your favorite authors as a child? I didn’t read much as a child except readers at school. Later I fell in love with Nancy Drew. Then in middle school, I graduated to O. Henry and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
Who do you envision your typical reader to be? I think Christian women read more of my books than anyone else.
I’m always intrigued by how writers get started…did you always have these books inside you and knew that you wanted to write them or did the idea just pop into your head one day and you decided to put pen to paper? The ideas just come to me as I write. Sometimes I begin writing and my characters take over and change everything around.
Do you write your books for your own enjoyment or more for what you think people would want to read? Of course, I write with the hope the readers will love my book, but I don’t compromise. I have to like my characters and enjoy their development. I write mostly about small towns and farms, places I know and love.
Which of your characters most reflects your personality? I think Maddy, in my Logan County Trilogy reflects my character more than most, but I usually put a bit of myself in all my leading ladies.
What do you do when you hit a roadblock and have NO idea what to write? I lay awake several nights and chat with my characters, plot out the next scene, and finally it comes alive on my keyboard.
I assume when you start a book, you pretty much have the plot laid out. No, I give my characters leeway and see where they lead me. I am a pantster.
Do you ever change your mind later on in the book, and go in a different direction? I have been known to delete the first six chapters of my manuscript.
What is one thing that you “never saw yourself doing” and either do it now or have done? My work in progress has a gay character in it. I never thought I could do that in good taste, but I believe I have.
Do you remember where you were or what you were doing when you started this story? I was writing the second chapter of another story when I picked up my characters, added a few years to them, and sat them down in a small town a hundred miles north.
