Today’s Word of Promise

Many days a week, I do a 4-mile aerobic walk. It takes me one hour. I listen to my Word of Promise Bible while I walk.

Today I listened to the first 19 chapters of Job.

A couple of things stood out to me as I walked and listened.

1. Job’s soul was filled with bitterness. He reviled the day he was born. He wanted not only to die, but to have died in the womb so that no one would have ever known of his existence. And yet, despite such negative feelings and bitterness, he did not sin. That tells me that we can despair, we can mourn, we can wail against the day and sin not.

   So often, well meaning friends (not unlike Job’s friends) try to tell us that there’s something wrong in despair, that there’s trouble in bitterness. I don’t believe that being bitter means that God will then set you aside. I think it means that things are just absolutely horrible and there’s a well of bitterness that’s growing inside. It doesn’t mean it will always be, but it means that sometimes it happens.

2. The second thing that stood out is rather random, but it just occurred to me today. When Job’s children died and his property was destroyed, Satan used the weather. Interesting that he had control of such. I don’t think I’d ever noticed that before.

Job is always hard to read for me. But, one thing that I always remember, and Job himself said it — this is such a short time in the blip of eternity. One day, we’ll stand before the Father. What earth was like, what we experienced here, what we endured – all of that will fade to nothing when we can fall at our Father’s feet and worship Him on his throne.
