Interview with Kristin Noel Fischer and a Giveaway!

Welcome to Readers Write to Know! I asked you, my readers, what questions they would ask their favorite authors if given the chance, and the authors visiting my blog answered them! This week, I have fellow people-watching Kristin Noel Fischer. I am completely intrigued by the plot of her latest release — and the best part is that she’s giving away TWO COPIES! Read on to see how you can enter to win!

Tell us a little bit about yourself. I’m a wife and a mother of six kids. I love writing, reading, and working out. And queso. I love chips and queso. Throw an avocado in there, and it feels like Christmas!

I’m deeply loved and adored by a yellow lab named Leo, so I’m often covered with dog hair. I also have a labradoodle that doesn’t shed but has quite the sassy attitude.

My husband and I have been married for 28 years, and we’ve recently taken up dancing lessons. Even though we step all over each other’s feet, dancing has been a lot of fun, and I hope we can continue for a long time.

Tell us about your current release. My most current release is called, Bianca’s Joy, Rose Island Book 3. The Rose Island series is classified as Contemporary Christian Romance, but it also focuses on the relationship between three Morgan sisters and their sister-in-law.

In Bianca’s Joy, Bianca desperately wants to meet the baby she gave up for adoption eighteen years ago. During the search for her daughter, she falls in love and discovers a secret that changes everything.

Like all of my books, Bianca’s Joy contains a big twist, and this is definitely one of the biggest!

I’m currently working on Vicki’s Gift, the fourth book in the Rose Island series. After that, I’m planning on writing the sequel to my most popular book, A Mother’s Choice.

Do you feel pressured to compromise your standards in order to reach a larger audience or be more successful? I actually don’t feel pressured to compromise my standards. In my bio, I say, “If you’re looking for a gritty but compelling read without gratuitous love scenes or foul language, you’ve come to the right place. If you prefer a more edgy read, Kristin hopes you’ll give her books a chance and tell her what you think.”

My goal is to write a compelling PG read with a subtle faith element. I like writing and reading about real people who struggle with real, contemporary issues. I also like seeing them rely on their family, friends, and faith to overcome those issues.

What’s the first major news headline that you can remember and what do you remember? Although this wasn’t the first headline I remember, I was deeply impacted by the Iran Hostage crisis. I spent a lot of time praying for the people involved and vividly remember the day they were released.

What is your personal, most effective way to get past writer’s block? The only way to get past writer’s block is to make yourself sit down and write. I usually set my timer and trick myself by saying, “You don’t really have to write, honey. You just have to sit here for 20 minutes, then you can do something else.”

More often than not, I get bored just sitting at my desk, and I find something to write about.

What inspired you to start writing, or did you always want to write? I always wanted to write. For as long as I can remember, my mind has been busy making up stories, especially when I was supposed to be paying attention in class. Whenever I hear something interesting in the news, I automatically start thinking about a story around those events. “People watching” at the airport is also a great way to generate new ideas.

Do you have your plotline and character development already laid out before you begin writing a book, or do they develop as you write? My plot definitely develops as I write the book. I would love to be the kind of writer who plots everything out beforehand, but that’s never worked for me.

At some point, the characters take over, and all I can do is run after them, jotting down notes and demanding that they explain their behavior to me.

What is your preferred method of writing? I do a lot of writing by hand, especially when I get stuck. For each book, I have stacks and stacks of yellow legal pads. When the book is published, I shred those drafts and throw the paper in the recycling bin.

Who were some of your favorite authors as a child? As a child, I loved Encyclopedia Brown, The Boxcar Children, and The Three Investigators. When my first son was born, I read all the Baby-Sitters Club books. I don’t know why, but those books brought me great comfort when I was dealing with the overwhelming responsibilities of caring for a newborn.

Kristin, you always inspire me. I think it’s great you and your husband are taking dance lessons. The couple that dances together, laughs together. I loved the Boxcar Children too. I think it was an early form of Survivor, without all the drama and crazy people.

Thanks for the great interview. It’s great you’re taking dancing lessons. I’ve told my husband we should do that. He’s 61 and I’m 58 and neither of us can dance at all. I have 2 left feet. But I think it would be fun if we could get past the embarrassment. We even have a decent place to practice in our living room. But he’s not interested at all. 🙂
