Best Friends

Those of you who follow me on social media know that I often post the “National Day” posts — for instance, yesterday was National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, so I posted a recipe for chocolate ice cream. It’s just something fun that gets quite a bit of interaction — obviously not on the scale of a cute cat picture, but some. I always enjoy trying to tie the day into something personal to me as a way of letting the people who follow me get to know me better.

lucy and ethelSo, today, June 8th, is National Best Friends Day. That one gave me pause. I didn’t know what to say about it or what to post about it.  The fact is, I’m not really a “best friends” kind of girl. Don’t get me wrong, I have some GOOD friends; friends I love having girls’ night out dates, friends I love meeting for coffee, friends I’d bring a meal to in a heartbeat. I have friends I could call on in an emergency, and friends I MISS SO MUCH after moving away from our home of 8 years. But, I don’t have a “best friend.”

I’m not a great friend on any “girl” level. I tend to keep to myself. I enjoy shopping alone, I enjoy meals alone, I don’t “need” someone to fill my time. I don’t enjoy talking on the phone, and chances are good it will take me an hour to return a text message. I have a daily schedule that I don’t relish interrupting.

I have a good friend in my new neighborhood with whom I have very quickly fallen in love. Recently, I remarked on how I wasn’t a good friend and she tried to challenge that. I said, “How many times this week did I call you?” The answer, of course, was zero.

He’s my first pick for calling, my first pick when I’m looking for a partner in crime, my first thought when I have important news to share. When I go out with girlfriends, as much as I enjoy it, I lose an evening with him and I actually have to convince myself to go. He gets my sense of humor and can fill in the blanks with all of my stories.

I know it’s cliche’, but it’s true. my husband really is my best friend. Happy National Best Friend Day, Gregg!

My best friend is my husband, also! Fun interview!

    1. Thank you!
      I guess it’s a cliche’ for a reason…LOL

  1. All I can say is “yes.” I get this. I know it’s true of you, but it’s also true about me. From an almost good friend who might be fun if we could ever convince ourselves to go out. 🙂

    1. I absolutely concur!
